Taking Precautions Before Deleting a Page
|
There will be times when a page in your site will need to be deleted.
Unless you follow these steps, you may end up with a big headache,
especially if there are pages nested beneath
the soon-to-be deleted page.
Here are three steps to take to avoid a "Delete Disaster."
|
|

|
 |
To delete a page,
go to that page.
Then select
Delete Page
from the gray panel
to the left of your screen.
If you have chosen a page that has pages beneath it,
the Warning message seen below
will pop-up.
If you were
to select "Yes,"
you may be headed
for trouble. |
Notice the sentence: If you delete this page, you will also lose the pages and content beneath it.

To Avoid a Delete Disaster:
1. We'll start by using the example below and to the right. Here we see the actual Tree View from Webtreepro's
Knowledge Center. The first listing of this view is the Top Level page, Page Management. Everything that has to do with
the subject of Page Management is placed under it.
|
-
On the other hand, notice the plus sign that is next to Add a New Page. That tells you there are Child pages under it. If you needed to delete Add a New Page, you would probably want to protect and save all the Child pages that are under it. |
 |
2. First, let's expand the tree view to expose the Child pages that are underneath Add a New Page. To do this, you need
to click on the plus sign to maximize the tree view. The tree will expand and show the Child pages that are
underneath Add a New Page.
|
-
If you deleted Add a New Page, all of these 6 pages would be deleted too, because they are connected. Think of a parent holding a child's hand. Wherever the parent goes, the child follows.
|
|
3. Essentially, what we are about to do is to "re-locate" each Child page temporarily. We're going to move the pages out from
under Add a New Page, and put them under Page Management. This way each page will no longer be connected to
Add a new Page but they will still be visible to users.
|
Note:
We are using Page Management just as an example. You can choose whatever page you'd like to put the Child pages under.
The point being, the Child pages need to be put in a safe place.
|
- As we move all the Child pages out from under Add a New Page and place them under Page Management, we will want to keep them in the same order, and in the same general area of the tree. This will make things easy when later we create a new Parent page for these Child pages.
4. Let's move through these steps. Using the tree view seen above, let's start with the first Child page, Page Attributes.
Click its title to bring the page up.
5. Once on Page Attributes, click Edit Page Settings located in the gray panel to the left of your screen which will bring up
the Edit Page wizard.

6. Click the Location tab to go to the Location screen, seen here.

7. You see the tree view below. We need to create a new Parent for the Child pages so, click on Page Management. It will
appear in a red, bold font. This means you have made Page Management become the Parent page to Page Attributes.
But there is already a page under Page Management. Where shall we put our displaced Child page...before or after
Page Template?
8. Let's make it easy for ourselves. Go to the bottom of the Location screen seen below, and by using the Show this page
dropdown, click as First Page, see below. Click Finish . This will cause our displaced Child page to become
re-located in the First Page position under Page Management.
9. Follow the same procedure with all the rest of the Child pages that are under Add a New Page. Always select Page Management to
be the Parent page.
-- In other words, the next page, Page Location should be placed after Page Attributes.
-- Page Published Date should be placed after Page Location.
-- Page Appearance should be placed after Page Publish Date, and so on.
10. When all Child pages are listed under Page Management and there are no other pages listed under Add a New Page,
you can safely delete it without any worries.
11. Finally, after the delete, you should find a different location for the displaced Child pages, or create a brand new Add a New Page.
13. To move the Child pages back under a new Parent, you would follow the same steps.
-
Click the Child page in the tree view to bring the page up.
-
Select Edit Page Settings.
-
Select the Location tab.
-
Choose a Parent page from the tree view to make it show in a red, bold font.
-
Using the Show this page dropdown, place each child page under the new Parent page.
-
Click Finish , and continue to the next Child page that needs re-placing. Remember to keep the Child pages in correct order.
-
Repeat.
